Butterfly Dream: Coronavirus Haiku by Pravat Kumar Padhy
English Original, March 21, 2020

English Original

coronavirus ...
even the shadows
drift away

Pravat Kumar Padhy

Chinese Translation (Traditional)

新冠狀病毒 ...
甚至陰影
都漸行漸遠

Chinese Translation (Simplified)

新冠状病毒 ...
甚至阴影
渐行渐远

Comment by Chen-ou Liu, 劉鎮歐 March 21, 2020

Enhanced by the use of "synecdoche," the juxtaposition of coronavirus and shadows drifting away effectively conveys a sense of a public health crisis.

Butterfly Dream: Winter Soup Haiku by Pravat Kumar Padhy
English Original

winter soup --
I remember the way
my grandmother hums

Akita: The Land of Poetry, 2014

Pravat Kumar Padhy

Chinese Translation (Traditional)

冬天熱湯
我記得祖母哼吟
的樣子

Chinese Translation (Simplified)

冬天热汤
记得祖母哼吟
样子

L1 sets the scene while an emotional undercurrent runs through Ls 2&3. A moment of happiness/satisfaction is keenly captured in the heartwarming image of the speaker's grandmother's humming.

Emotionally and tonally speaking, it might be interesting to do a comparative reading of the following haiku:

pumpkin soup
tasting a spoonful
of sunset

Stardust Haiku, 10, October 2017
