Art of Language

swelling river
I breathe
some freshness
before managing  to cross
with a bit of effort

At my new place of posting, I feel alone where the language is all Greek to me! I try to switch back to the prehistoric style of communication by murmuring my lips and moving my fingers. She is kind enough to guess and points me towards the restaurant. When I look back with due acknowledgement, she does the same with a sense of confirmation.

the vendor’s wide smile

One Man's Maple Moon: Journey Tanka by Pravat Kumar Padhy

English Original

wave after wave
on an incessant journey
another sunset
when I long to change the taste
of salt, the colour of the wind

Skylark, 2:2, Winter 2014

Pravat Kumar Padhy

Chinese Translation (Traditional)

一波又一波
在一個不間斷的旅程中
當我渴望改變
鹽的口味,風的顏色時
另一個日落的到來

Chinese Translation (Simplified)

一波又一波
在一个不间断的旅程中
当我渴望改变
盐的口味,风的颜色时
另一个日落的到来

Comment:

There is no excitement, joy, or new discovery in the speaker's "incessant journey," just one after "another (same old) sunset" when the speaker "long[s] to change the taste/of salt, the colour of the wind."

A fresh tanka about an incessant journey of sameness.

Today's poetic food for thought on journey:

Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.

Matsuo Basho, "Narrow Road to the Interior."

Seven Last Words from the Cross the colour of compassion and clemency
--Pravat Kumar Padhy (Bhubaneswar, India)
Comment by David McMurray
The haikuist referred to seven sayings, Jesus Christ’s last words that were spoken on a Friday in April of the year 33. His epitaph revealed what was ultimately important to a dying man nailed onto a wooden cross: 1. Forgiveness, 2. Salvation, 3. Relationship, 4. Abandonment, 5. Distress, 6. Triumph and 7. Reunion.
