Examples of Hainka Poem by Pravat Kumar Padhy

Hainka: A Fusion of Haiku and Tanka
Pravat Kumar Padhy has invented a genre of poetry, “Hainka’, which is a poetic fusion of haiku and tanka, and is characterized by the image linking of the ‘fragment of the haiku as the ‘pivot line’ (kakekatobaof the following tanka. The idea struck him in 2016. But later on, in July 2020, he published an insightful article with some examples of hainkaUnlike the continuous linked form as seen in renga, the hainka is proposed as a single and independent genre of its own. Instead of merely linking a haiku with tanka on the qualitative term, the synthesis in hainka is based on the image linking (the ‘fragment’ of haiku acting as the ‘pivot line’ of the following tanka) to explore human nature, love, emotion on a broader sense by juxtaposing the overall imageries. For convenience,  the fragment and the pivot line are denoted in italic.  Overall  hainka needs to portray a broader manifestation of coherency of the images keeping in view the aspect of ‘link and shift’ within the framework of the combined poem. The linked poem, hainka, can be composed either by the poet himself or in collaboration; haiku by a poet and tanka by another poet.

 Hainka translated by Dr. Mohammad H Raisha, have appeared in the Algerian newspaper, "Middle Maghreb", 24.12.2020

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

Black Bamboo Haiku Anthology, 2020

Chapter Two: The Holy Grail of Haiku

Pravat Kumar Padhy has provided an elegant description of haiku. Pravat writes, “In all haiku writing, exploration of lightness (karumi) and creativeness (zoko) in nature is the main aspect. How to unveil the beauty in tiny objects and to express reverence to all are the resonances of haiku. A unique genre indeed!” This is perfectly stated by a true poet.

Many haikuists will one day have the satisfaction of writing one transcendental piece, three lines and seventeen syllables that are the Holy Grail, that resolve all koans, that lash together the Universe from the Big Bang to the present moment. The concept of subject and object will be pierced, overcome, and the distinction between poet and haiku will be eliminated. Such a haiku would serve as an epitaph worthy of Basho or Yeats.

Sound of breaking waves:

A spray of seawater shoots

Through the reef’s blowhole.

Kevin McLaughlin

Pravat Kumar Padhy is a scholar suffused with poetic vision and a feel for non-duality. His writings are a seminar of how to write and read a haiku. All haikuists, none more than I, would benefit from a close reading of his collection Cosmic Symphony.

vast value of life

compressed in a seed
